What the Starlink Mini Actually Is
The Starlink Mini is SpaceX's portable satellite dish with a built-in WiFi router — the entire system in one flat unit weighing roughly 1.1 kg. Unlike the original Starlink hardware, there is no separate router, no external power brick chain, and no fixed installation. Set it down or clamp it with a clear view of the sky, power it, and you have real broadband within minutes.

Two of those rows are worth pausing on. The latency figure — 25 to 40 milliseconds — means video calls, remote camera feeds, and cloud-based review tools behave like they do on office internet, not like the satellite connections of the past. And the power draw is low enough that battery operation isn't a compromise; it's the normal way to run it.
What It Does on a Real Set
Remote and rural locations. This is the headline use case. Cottage country, farmland, provincial parks, industrial land on the edge of the GTA — the places productions go for the frame are exactly the places cellular coverage thins out. The Starlink Mini doesn't care. If it can see the sky, you have broadband.
Congested urban events. Less obvious but just as valuable: festivals, sporting events, and busy public shoots where thousands of phones are hammering the same cell towers. Cellular performance collapses under congestion; satellite doesn't share those towers. A Starlink Mini at a packed event is often faster than a hotspot standing right next to it.
Uploads from set. Unlimited data changes how you think about the connection. Push dailies, selects, or full card offloads to post from location without watching a data meter. Planning the Deployment
Two things to know when you're putting a Starlink Mini on the call sheet, so it performs the way it should:
It needs open sky. The dish talks to satellites passing overhead, so it wants an unobstructed view — a clearing, a rooftop, a parking area, the top of the grip truck. Dense tree canopy directly overhead or a deep urban canyon between towers will degrade the connection. On a scout, note where the dish will live the same way you'd note where the generator goes. Thirty seconds of planning eliminates the issue entirely.
Weather affects speed, not survival. The unit is IP67 rated — rain, snow, and dust are not a problem for the hardware. Heavy rainfall can temporarily reduce throughput (this is physics, not a defect — it affects all satellite systems), and speeds recover as the weather passes. For most production traffic, the connection remains fully usable throughout.
Starlink Mini or Cellular Hotspot?
We rent both, and the honest answer is that they're both excellent tools that win in different conditions. This isn't a hierarchy — it's a coverage map.
A cellular hotspot is the right call when you're shooting in the city on a normal day. Toronto's 5G coverage is strong, a hotspot switches on instantly with zero setup, it works indoors and in vehicles without a sky view, and it fits in a pocket. For interior studio days, downtown locations, and moving-vehicle work, a hotspot is the simplest possible solution and we'll happily recommend one.
The Starlink Mini is the right call when the location is remote, the cell map is uncertain, the event is crowded, the data requirement is heavy, or the connection genuinely cannot be allowed to fail. It brings its own infrastructure. It doesn't depend on where the nearest tower is or how many other people are using it.
